Mastering The Tuck Turn Spin in East Coast Swing

The East Coast Swing is one of the most popular and energetic social dances, known for its upbeat tempo, playful movements, and versatility. Among the many turns and spins that dancers can incorporate, the Tuck Turn Free Spin is a fun variation that adds flair and excitement to any routine. In this blog, we’ll break down the mechanics of this move, key techniques to execute it smoothly, and tips for mastering it on the dance floor.

Understanding the Tuck Turn Free Spin

The Tuck Turn Free Spin is an advanced variation of the basic tuck turn. Typically, in a standard tuck turn, the leader guides the follower into a turn while maintaining a connection. In the free spin version, the leader releases the follower at the beginning of the turn, allowing them to spin freely before reestablishing the connection.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

Leader’s Role:

  1. Initiate the Tuck: Starting in a handshake hold, and dance a basic rock step (step 1-2). On steps 3-4, dance a very small left foot forward chasse and contract the right arm to gently ‘tuck’ the follower in, leading them to dance a small right foot forward chasse towards the leader while keeping the connected right hands at the follower’s waist level to prepare the follower to turn.

  2. Provide Clear Rotation: Using compression into the connected hands, the leader will lead the follower to spin independently on their right foot in a clockwise direction on count 4 by rotating their left hip back and releasing the hold.

  3. Prepare to Reconnect: After the spin, offer your hand for reconnection to continue dancing 5-6 of the Basic Step.

Follower’s Role:

  1. Follow the Tuck: As the leader tucks your hand towards your right side (waist level), allow your body to rotate left while dancing a right foot forward chasse towards the leader to prepare for rotation.

  2. Complete the Spin Gracefully: Upon release, the follower will spin on the right foot and maintain balance by spotting a focal point (the leader) while keeping the core muscles engaged on count 4.

  3. Reestablish Connection: Look for the leader’s hand to smoothly transition into 5-6 of the Basic Step.

Tips for a Smooth Execution

  • Communication is Key: Leaders should ensure a smooth and clear lead, while followers should stay receptive to subtle cues.

  • Controlled Momentum: Followers should use their own core strength to control the spin rather than relying solely on the leader’s push.

  • Spotting Technique: Keeping eyes fixed on a focal point helps minimize dizziness and maintains orientation.

  • Smooth Transitions: Leaders should anticipate the reconnection to keep the dance flowing effortlessly.
